British Junior open 2010

This years British open championships provided a great opportunity for the elitesqaush juniors to test themselves against the worlds best. Peter Joyce, Ruoshan Yau and Tory Temple Murray all progressed into the last 32 of their categories, then went on to finish 23rd 25th and 17th respectively. Ewen Howard and Konrad Tyma both suffered unfortunate first round losses but to their credit played the next 5 matches thereafter like they were finals finishing 35th and 55th respectively.

The main lessons learnt during the championships from all our juniors was that the intensity of play from the top players is another level higher than they are used to. In addition to very impressive attacking squash from the Egyptians who dominated the event, it is noticeable the difference in desire to win every point. Sometimes this would be evident from spectacular winning shots but also sometimes from a series of superb retrieving and tenacity to stay in the rally.

So now back in Bristol it is time to take stock from what has been seen and experienced and apply it in practice and matches. All training needs to be done with desire and maximum effort while also learning to find the 'buzz' from the faster more aggressive squash style. Our juniors must approach each practice the same as they would like to play. In addition take responsibility for some of their own progress. Extra solo sessions, ghosting and watching top players whenever possible on T.V. or live is essential.

Exciting times ahead for the elitesquash juniors and coaches as we continue to try get the maximum from all our players.
